Create OpenVPN Access Server Droplet

Description

With more than 60 million downloads since inception, OpenVPN provides Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions to secure data around the world. OpenVPN Access Server is designed specifically for businesses — it protects data communications, secures IoT, and provides secure remote access to on-premise, data center, and public cloud resources.

SECURE. OpenVPN Access Server supports a wide range of configurations and provides secure and granular remote access to internal network and private cloud network resources and applications.

AGILE. Integrates OpenVPN server capabilities, enterprise management capabilities, and private tunneling to accommodate Windows, macOS, Linux (32-bit and 64-bit), Android, and iOS environments.

SCALABLE. Our licensing model is based on the number of concurrent connected devices, so it's affordable for any size business and can easily scale to meet growth demands. Without a license key installed, OpenVPN Access Server allows 2 concurrent connections for testing purposes, for no charge (excepting Digital Ocean connecting costs).

Getting started after deploying OpenVPN Access Server

Deployment steps

  1. Log on via SSH to start the setup procedure, you will be asked a number of questions that need to be answered.
  2. Once that is complete, enter the command "passwd openvpn" to set a password for your Access Server.
  3. Now open the address of your server in a web browser, for example: https://123.45.67.89/admin/
  4. If you see any SSL certificate warnings, that is normal, please override them.
  5. Now log on with username 'openvpn' and the password you set in step 2.

You can now start using your OpenVPN Access Server by adding users in the User Permissions table, and by checking and adjusting settings as needed in the VPN Settings page. By visiting the Access Server address without the /admin in the URL in your web browser, you can then log in as a user and obtain the required software and settings to get connected. There is documentation available on our website:

API Creation

In addition to creating a Droplet from the OpenVPN Access Server 1-Click App via the control panel, you can also use the DigitalOcean API.

As an example, to create a 4GB OpenVPN Access Server Droplet in the SFO2 region, you can use the following curl command. You’ll need to either save your API access token to an environment variable or substitute it into the command below.

  curl -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
       -H 'Authorization: Bearer '$TOKEN'' -d \
      '{"name":"choose_a_name","region":"sfo2","size":"s-2vcpu-4gb","image":"openvpn-18-04"}' \
